Re "Big crowd protests school closures" (Our Region, Feb. 8): My fiancee and I bought a house in Curtis Park last year, next to Bret Harte Elementary. We want to start our family here, and a neighborhood elementary school was a major factor in our decision to buy here.
Now Bret Harte is on a list to be closed, and our children will end up at Father Kenny or Oak Ridge Elementary. These schools are more than a mile away, and have lower performance and enrollment than Bret Harte.
I can't follow the logic of closing high-performing, high-enrolled schools to keep lower-performing, lower-enrolled schools open. I also can't follow the economics that expect enrollment to stay up while forcing students out of their neighborhoods and into schools the district itself identifies as "low performing, high poverty."
We want to send our children to Bret Harte Elementary. Please give us that opportunity.
