Sacramento's Iu Mien community – largest in the nation – will celebrate Lunar New Year on Saturday by honoring Mien elders.

Some of the community's most respected figures will don traditional clothes and perform on traditional Iu Mien instruments, including drums, gongs and flutes, to call back ancestor spirits to bless the new year, said Kao Thun, program coordinator for United Iu Mien.

"This is the year of the snake, which can bring good luck," Thun said.

The festival will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Los Robles Apartments Community Room, 5500 Sky Parkway in Sacramento.

The event is free, and there will be traditional Iu Mien food for participants.

The elders are part of the Iu-Mien Healthy Village Senior Group, which addresses mental health issues, family violence and other health concerns, Thun said.
