The Sacramento Regional Transit board is expected on Monday offer its general manager, Mike Wiley, a new five-year contract at an annual salary of $189,000.
Wiley is credited with guiding RT out of its worst financial crisis ever, during the recent recession, when the agency cut service by 20 percent, froze wages and reduced its workforce.
RT has since begun restoring service, and is laying the groundwork for further expansion.
"Mike's commitment to RT is unmatched," board chairman Pat Hume of Elk Grove said. "He guided the organization through rocky times, and we've since come back from the brink. We're more efficient. He is providing accountability."
Wiley will not receive a pay increase.
"He didn't ask for one," Hume said. "He recognized even though we are in a better place, it is still hard economic times."
Wiley, a 35-year RT employee, took over the top spot in 2008. He is noted for regularly riding light rail and buses to chat with riders, and holding online internet question and answer sessions.
