Re "Study finds root of mammals' family tree" (Page A9, Feb. 8): A six-year study of the mammalian family tree has identified a rat-sized animal as the most likely common ancestor species connected with humans.
This is wonderful news. Science marches on! But the article also states that the species has been so obscure that it lacks a colloquial nickname.
As the Latin name is way too hard to remember, let alone pronounce properly, I hereby suggest a more apt and fitting popular name: ratboy. Please inform Science magazine of this suggestion ASAP.
