Re "UCD surgery leaves family bereft" (Page A1, Feb. 10): I am truly sorry for the loss the families suffered as a result of their loved ones dying. I too know the heartache of personal loss. However, I feel the surgeons in this case are taking a beating they don't deserve. There are many questions to be asked and answered before anyone can say these doctors are guilty of anything more compassion for their patients and trying to save lives.
These patients and their families were told there was no other hope for treating them and they were clearly told the risks of the experimental procedure. They chose to have the surgery and I believe most of us would do the same.
Frankly, I have a larger portion of compassion for the animals in the laboratory who also suffer and die from experimental procedures and do not have a choice.
