In some Sacramento neighborhoods, earning a million dollars usually takes the work of a lifetime. In others, it usually takes a few years.

This chart shows the length of time it would take a household in 20 Sacramento communities earning the average annual income to make $1 million, according to census figures. For instance, the average annual household income in Elk Grove is about $91,000, meaning it would take just under 11 years for a household earning that to make $1 million, in current dollars.

Households in the wealthiest local community, Granite Bay, typically earn about as much in ten weeks as residents in the least wealthy local community, South Sacramento, earn in a year.
