The Capitals protected their rights to Mardy Fish and Sam Querrey in Tuesday's World TeamTennis draft of marquee players.
Querrey is ranked No. 20 on the ATP Tour and Fish is No. 32.
Andy Roddick, a former world No. 1 player, was the top pick, selected by the Springfield, Mo., Lasers. It will be Roddick's seventh WTT season and first since 2010.
Venus Williams returns to the defending champion Washington Kastles.
The new WTT team, the Texas Wild, will retain the No. 1 doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan. The former Kansas City, Mo., team has relocated to Irving, Texas.
Teams will complete their lineups when the roster draft is held March 12. The 2013 team schedules will be announced in early March.
The eight-team league starts July 7, with the winners of the Eastern and Western conferences facing off in the final July 28.
• Former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, looking for his first singles title in nearly three years and his first title on hardcourt in seven years, advanced with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory over Blaz Kavcic in the SAP Open in San Jose.
In doubles, Michael and Bob Bryan edged Americans Steve Johnson, a two-time NCAA singles champion while at USC, and Jack Sock, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5).

Tour of California will include Diablo climb
The Bay Area will offer lung-burning challenges for some of the world's best cyclists during the 2013 Amgen Tour of California.
Starting with a 19.6-mile time trial in south San Jose followed by a grueling ascent of 3,864-foot Mount Diablo, the three Northern California stages conclude with a scenic trek from San Francisco to Santa Rosa, according to released route details.
North America's biggest cycling event will travel south to north for the first time since its debut in 2006. The 750-mile race will begin May 12 in Escondido and end eight days later in downtown Santa Rosa.
For the second consecutive year, the Tour is skipping the Sacramento region.

Sac State softball loses home opener
The Sacramento State softball team allowed three Pacific runs with two outs in the seventh inning and lost 3-0 to the Tigers in a nonleague game, Sac State reported on its website.
It was the second home-opening loss in seven seasons for the Hornets (3-3). Pitcher Caitlin Brooks, named the Big Sky Conference Pitcher of the Week before the game, allowed five hits and struck out seven in seven innings against the Tigers (3-0). Yesenia Alcala had two hits for the Hornets.
