This Sept. 6, 2011 file photo shows opponents of gay marriage outside a courthouse in San Francisco where the California Supreme Court was hearing arguments on California's ban on same-sex marriage. The Supreme Court will take up California's ban on same-sex marriage, a case that could give the justices the chance to rule on whether gay Americans have the same constitutional right to marry as heterosexuals.

Gay couples to request marriage licenses to call attention to issue

Gay and lesbian couples will be appearing at county clerk counters today for the annual effort to draw attention to their desire for same-sex marriage.

Today's request for marriage licenses, the 15th such annual event, will occur in San Francisco, Houston, Columbus, Ohio, and in Sacramento at noon at the county clerk-recorder's office, 600 8th Street.

Nicola Simmersbach and Diana Luiz have wanted to be married for several years.

"Diana and I are hopeful that our day will come and pray that it is soon," said Simmersbach in press release from same-sex marriage proponents.

The Supreme Court has announced it will hear a challenge to Proposition 8 -- the 2008 measure passed by voters to ban same-sex marriage in California.

• Don't repeat the same comment over and over. We heard you the first time.

• Do not use the commenting system for advertising. That's spam and it isn't allowed.
