Re "Finally, aid for severely mentally ill?" (Dan Morain, Feb. 10): Sens Darrell Steinberg, Leland Yee and Lou Correa, in promising counties incentives to implement Laura's Law, have shown uncommon leadership and courage.
Laura's Law in Nevada County has salvaged lives and relieved unnecessary suffering from untreated mental illness while saving the county money. Finally, Proposition 63 funds will no longer be denied individuals too sick to ask for help.
Laura's Law is not a replacement for other programs, nor are so-called voluntary services a replacement for Laura's Law programs. They can both be effective and together provide a necessary continuum of care. This is long overdue.
We should not be asking if we need a Laura's Law program. We should be asking how we implement one.
