Re: "Finally, aid for severely mentally ill?" (Dan Morain, Forum): As a family member of someone who suffers not only from severe mental illness, but also from anosognosia (inability to recognize the illness in himself), I am overjoyed that Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg is now clarifying that Proposition 63 funds will be available to fund Laura's Law programs.
I often tried to get help for my family member when he was too ill to do so, but was unable to because he wasn't an immediate threat to himself or others.
This led to his illness worsening, and longer hospitalization. I know if he had received treatment earlier, even involuntarily, as he could not consent, he would be much healthier and happier today. He would be home, instead of in a hospital. We need Laura's Law now to help this small population of treatment-resistant people, so they can have a better quality of life.
