What: The Sacramento Philharmonic pays homage with "Heroes!" It's a family concert of Aaron Copland's "Lincoln Portrait" (with celebrity narrators), John Williams' "Superman March," Disney's "Suite from Mulan" and "Star Trek Through the Years."

Black history festival

What: Showcasing the art, culture, history and traditions of the African diaspora, the Crocker Art Museum opens for a holiday festival with storytelling, music, dance, gallery tours, hands-on learning, a community marketplace and Arabella Grayson's extensive collection of Black paper dolls. It's all presented as a collaboration with the Sojourner Truth Multicultural Art Museum and the Sacramento Observer.

Birds for the world

Nature in a digital world

What: The Sacramento Audubon will let the birds do the tweeting if you'll do the clicking – on your smartphone, that is. Learn how thousands of enthusiasts are using the Cornell Ornithology Lab's digital eBird program to contribute sightings to an international database. On hand will be Brian Sullivan, an "eBird" project leader at Cornell.
