Re "Levee fixes grind to a halt" (Page A1, Feb. 16): Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Elk Grove, doesn't think his constituents should have to pay for Sacramento levee improvements through their taxes. He states: "I've got a responsibility to protect people in my district who have chosen not to live in a floodplain. ... It's not fair to force them to subsdize the flood protection of others".
Most of McClintocks' district is prone to wildfires, so a 'responsible' taxpayer might respond: We the responsible taxpayers of California have a duty to protect ourselves from those who have chosen to live in fire-prone areas. It is not fair to ask us to subsidize the fire protection of your constituents. The next time you need a fire retardant drop from a huge air tanker or a few thousand brave Calfire firefighters, we'll have to think about it.
