Sacramento blends small-town friendliness, big-time liveliness

Napoleon Cristobal of Sacramento is the winner of our reader essay contest on "Why I love Sacramento." In addition to having his essay published in The Bee, Santos wins two tickets to an upcoming performance and dinner with Bee theater critic Marcus Crowder.

I always thought that I can't live at any other place than the Bay Area, until I moved to Sacramento.

Sacramento is a dynamic cosmopolitan city. Sacramento has the vibe of a big city, but with the friendliness of a small town. I love Sacramento because of its people, weather, night life and history.

When my friends visit, they always mention that Sacramento is friendlier than the Bay Area. They are so amazed that when they go to a restaurant, staff at the restaurant actually treats them as valuable guests without the attitude they are accustomed to. It really gives me a big smile when I hear such comments from my friends!

Sacramento is blessed with great weather for outdoor dining for most of the year. Sacramento has plenty of restaurants for just about every cuisine one can think of. My sister, who lives in Seattle, says that Sacramento restaurants are absolutely "amazing" and the ambiance feels like she is in New York City!

However, Sacramento has lots of trees, as much as Paris!

I love the Sacramento night life and entertainment. The Second Saturday Art Walk event is something to look forward to during the summer; there's plenty of free entertainment right on the street.

How many places can we go to and see mermaids swimming in a gigantic tank? No … not Las Vegas, but in Sacramento!

I love the historical significance of Sacramento. Just stroll down Old Sacramento to experience the Gold Rush and our Western history. Sacramento has the Governor's Mansion, Stanford Mansion, Crocker Art Museum and the state Capitol!

Sacramento's Historic City Cemetery is an outdoor museum adorned with ornate statues and vintage roses from the 1800s. Most recently, Sacramento was named as one of the most diverse cities in the country – that is something we can all be proud of. It will take an entire book to write every single reason why I LOVE SACRAMENTO.

Sacramento welcomed me with open arms and I fell into its loving arms.
