One of the West's most successful baseball stadiums turned 10 this summer without yet stimulating new development in a long-blighted industrial area nearby. But Raley Field has fueled a riverfront growth vision during the past decade that promises a new skyline and entertainment-residential district in the shadow of its home runs. The City of West Sacramento, fueled by millions of dollars in government and private infrastructure funds, has just begun a huge project to build the zone's new streets, sidewalks, trees and and utility upgrades by Dec. 2011. Then developers, led by owners of Arden Fair Mall, plan to start construction on a massive long-term mixed use zone called the Bridge District. One or two decades from now, the thinking goes, a stadium that started as a catalyst will be a "bonus" that brings 700,000 extra people yearly to an already-thriving riverfront district.
