Re "Floodplain dwellers should pay full cost for levees" (Another View, Feb. 22): Rep. Tom McClintock, formerly a state senator representing Southern California and now a Sierra district congressman, retains the delusional ideas of his mentor, Congressman John Doolittle, in advocating for the $4 billion dollar white elephant Auburn dam.
McClintock is correct that the dam has been well studied. But contrary to McClintock and Doolittle, the project was not mothballed for "ideological" reasons, it was stopped because an earthquake fault runs through the center of the dam site -- not surprising as the suture point for the North American and Pacific plates is close by. I recognize this is only science and is probably tainted with liberal bias and ideology, but in this case the science prevailed.
The dam site is now a popular park area bringing much revenue to Auburn business. Hypocritical that small government McClintock, always ready to cut projects for others, supports this expensive subsidized federal project.
