Re "Fire boss defends secret fund" (Capitol & California, Feb. 22): I am one of the select few in Placer County who has been charged the dreaded "fire fee" for rural fire prevention, which is in actuality an illegal tax (not voted on by the people).
I am outraged that this tax was forced upon me only to find out that the fire agencies are secretly hoarding my money. I am located within a fire district, have cleared my five acres, have a 20-foot-deep pond, as well as Nevada Irrigation District water on my land (I pay a hefty price for said irrigation), yet I was deemed to subject to this tax.
This is a prime example of California state government run amok. I demand a full refund (with interest) of this illegally collected tax. Maybe the fire agencies should stop hoarding my money and try fining those who don't clear their land. I am not responsible for other people's land.
