Re "Sutter Health saluted for alcoholism program" (Our Region, Feb. 23): It is wonderful that a program such as the Serial Inebriate Program, which houses up to 10 homelss people for 90 days to help them overcome chronic substance abuse problems, can be held out as a beacon of success for alcohol and other drug treatment in Sacramento.
However, upon closer review there are at least 25 treatment programs operating in Sacramento, all of which contribute to the reduction of public intoxication and homelessness.
The number served by the Serial Inebriate Program was 21 people and the most served in a month was six.
Sacramento is blessed to have the amount of services for treatment that it does have and all of these treatment facilities, residential and day programs are worthy of a national award.
