Re "System fails struggling mom again" (Dan Morain, Feb. 24): In reality we have no workable system and there are millions of Matthew Herrera's in our country.
Herrera was released from jail where he was kept separate from other inmates for his safety and theirs. What about our safety now? And what about Herrera?
When released from jail all we in society offered him was a disposable paper jumpsuit and flip flops. What else did he have? He had his mom who is overwhelmed and tries to help and do the right thing but is stymied as to what to do. Don't feel bad. Mom, psychologists, psychologists and police don't know what to do either.
Herrera did also have Loaves and Fishes (even though The Bee's Marco Breton has berated this wonderful organization).
We don't need a forum to see our system's flaws. Could we take a few obvious steps like making mental health care more available?
