Re "Teary testimony on assault guns brings sides no closer to a deal" (Page A7, Feb. 28): "Responsible legal gun owners are not the problem," is something we keep hearing from gun rights advocates. This is clearly a true statement, but who ever said that was not the case? The problem is irresponsible, illegal, and mentally deranged gun owners. We need to find ways to reduce the numbers of those ranks, and to make it harder for those people to get guns of any kind, and especially semi-automatic weapons with huge magazines.
This means better background checks without gun show loopholes, and more stringent rules for the issuing of gun ownership permits, to ensure responsibility. These rules need to be nationwide or else they are useless. Nobody is suggesting taking away all the guns from responsible gun owners. They need to stop squawking like deranged chickens and contribute to the discussion on what needs to be done. Stop changing the subject. You are not helping.
