Re "Scary talk aside, effect of cuts hard to predict" (Page A1, Feb. 28): As policymakers in Washington, D.C. consider budget cuts under the "fiscal cliff deal" and prepare to enact a 2 percent "sequestration" cut, I fear for facilities such as mine, DaVita Elk Grove Dialysis, which provides life-saving dialysis care to 122 Sacramento-area kidney failure patients.
Eighty percent of dialysis patients rely on a bundled Medicare payment to cover 4-hour dialysis treatments three times a week. This population is already at risk as dialysis providers adjust to 2011, 2012 and 2013 cuts. Additional cuts could jeopardize patients further, as some facilities may be forced to close.
I believe Rep. Ami Bera's heart is with our patients and all his constituents. I applaud his recent visit to our clinic. I encourage readers to contact Rep. Bera to express support for all individuals who rely on dialysis care to survive.
