Re "Do we just accept guns' rising toll?" (Marcos Breton, Feb. 20): Gunners are right: banning guns won't work. In a democracy, citizens should make their own lifestyle choices.
Here are two suggestions, a carrot and a stick, for giving citizens some clear choices on guns.
The carrot: state and federal tax exemptions for gun-free households. Citizens choosing to live gun-free lives get a pass on state and federal taxes because they are not contributing to the annual multi-billion-dollar public health crisis being caused by guns.
The stick: everyone convicted of using a gun to commit a felony has the thumbs and trigger fingers surgically removed from both hands, thereby ensuring they will never again be able to hold a gun or pull a trigger.
Both suggestions let citizens make their own choices while leaving the Second Amendment intact and law-abiding gun owners with nothing to fear. It's time to get serious about changing our gun culture.
