Local colllege basketball: UCD beats Fullerton for third straight win

FULLERTON – J.T. Adenrele had 22 points and 15 rebounds Saturday night to help UC Davis hold on for its third consecutive victory, 71-68 over Cal State Fullerton.

Adenrele was 10 for 14 from the floor for the Aggies (14-14, 9-7), who clinched at least the No. 6 seed in the Big West Conference tournament.

UC Davis, which has won five of its last six games, hosts Long Beach State on Thursday in an 8 p.m. game to be nationally televised by ESPN2, then hosts UC Irvine on Saturday in a regular-season finale.

The Titans (14-15, 6-10) led 66-65 after Corey Vaughn's two free throws with 3:08 left. But Adenrele's jumper gave UC Davis the lead back, and Tyler Les and Corey Hawkins (16 points) sank two free throws apiece to seal the win.

Sacramento State 53, Idaho State 52 at the Nest – The Hornets (14-13, 8-10) stayed in the hunt for a Big Sky Conference tournament berth by beating the Bengals (5-23, 4-14).

Sac State is tied for sixth with Montana State and Northern Arizona as they jockey for a spot in the seven-team field. The Hornets end the regular season Thursday at Montana and Saturday at Montana State.

Jordan Salley had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Sac State. His dunk with 2:40 left put the Hornets ahead 53-46.

Idaho State closed to 53-52 with 1:10 left but misfired on two shots in the final 23 seconds.


Idaho State 81, Sacramento State 61 in Pocatello, Idaho – The Hornets (16-11, 11-7 Big Sky) shot 33.3 percent and had a season-low six assists in the loss to the Bengals (17-10, 12-6), according to the Sac State athletics website.

Kylie Kuhns had 22 points and seven rebounds for the Hornets, who have clinched a Big Sky tournament berth and are in fifth place with two regular-season games left. They host Montana State on Thursday and Montana on Saturday.

Long Beach State 66, UC Davis 54 in Long Beach – The Aggies missed a chance to clinch a berth in the Big West tournament by falling to the 49ers, according to the UC Davis athletics website.

UC Davis (12-16, 7-10) led 37-34 at halftime. But Long Beach (15-13, 8-8) took control with a 10-0 run early in the second half.

Sydnee Fipps had 17 points, including four three-pointers, for UC Davis.

The Aggies, seeking a spot in the eight-team tournament, are in seventh place. They host Pacific in a regular-season finale Saturday.
