Is relief from the prolonged winter dry spell on the way?
Very likely, says the National Weather Services.
Rain will sprinkle in the foothills and the Sierra along the Interstate 80 corridor this afternoon, as a weak weather system moves through the area, said Tom Dang, a weather service forecaster. Up to a few tenths of an inch of rain fell over the weekend in the mountains.
A stronger system is forecast to sweep into Northern California later this week, bringing moderate amounts of rain to the valley and snow in the mountains, possibly by Tuesday night or Wednesday, he said.
Showers could continue into Thursday, with up to an inch of rainfall expected, accompanied by breezy winds and a possibility of thunderstorms.
In the mountains, more than a foot of snow could accumulate in higher elevations this week, Dang said.
"Snow levels will initially be between 6,000 to 7,000 feet, but will lower to 3,000 to 4,000 feet by Wednesday," he predicted.
Dang said travel over mountain highways could be affected beginning Tuesday.
Skies will begin clearing on Friday, and sunny weather will be back by next weekend, with temperatures climbing to almost 70 degrees on Saturday.
