Re "Bee sensationlizes CalPERS rate hike" (Another View, March 2): I signed up for the CalPERS long term-care insurance bait 10 years ago at age 60 -- the top plan with inflation protection, secure because repeated assurances in CalPERS materials said rate increases would be rare.
My premium then was $216 per month. However, every few years there has been a significant rate increase with accompanying explanations seeming to urge switching to lesser coverage. But I stayed with the top plan. My premium now is $362.67 per month. Now we are informed the premium will increase 85 percent, which will bring me to $670.94/month, a 300 percent increase over 10 years! Pretty tough for a 70-year-old retiree to absorb!
So do CalPERS Deputy Executive Officer Ann Boyton's rationalizations comfort me? No! Do I think the Bee sensationalized the obscene rate hike. No! The Bee understated the issue. CalPERS needs to rethink this rate increase. Stay on 'em, Bee!
