Re "Retired but hardly at rest" (Forum, March 3): Ex-Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's civics education advocacy appeal strikes a real note.
While running for the 2012 6th Assembly District race I was concerned with how little the voters I addressed knew or were concerned with what our elected state representatives do on a daily basis.
I could not get a decent job description from them. While addressing a college political science club -- limiting my comments to the mechanics of running a political race such as fundraising, operations, public speaking, etc. -- I asked them for their current representative's job description.
They could not respond with any real job mechanics. No one knew the details. So, I spent two hours explaining the job to them.
I asked them how they could judge how to vote for someone without knowing what that representative does and how to judge whether they did a good job? That club knows now. Many others do not.

• Don't use all capital letters. That's akin to yelling and not appreciated by the audience.
• Don't flag other users' comments just because you don't agree with their point of view. Please only flag comments that violate these guidelines.
