A parched 2013 had the first rain in two weeks overnight in Sacramento.

Rainfall totals varied throughout the region from less than a tenth of rain to more than a quarter-of-an-inch. In the Sierra Nevada, snowfall was heavy at times, necessitating the need for chain controls.

The National Weather Service expects showers, accompanied by wind and perhaps a thunderstorm, today in Sacramento. Snow will continue to fall in the mountains where the snowpack has been diminishing during January and February.

Rainfall totals the past 24 hours include: .08 in Elk Grove, .22 in Sacramento, .20 in Rancho Cordova, .19 in Fair Oaks, .24 in Orangevale, .31 in Rio Linda, .12 at Folsom Lake, .24 in Roseville, .39 in Newcastle and .59 in Auburn.

Tire chains were required for travel on Highway 50 and Interstate 80 this morning.
