Aditya Mishra, a sixth-grader from Excelsior Elementary School in Roseville, will represent the Sacramento region the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., after winning the California Central Valley Spelling Bee this afternoon.

Mishra, whose older sister placed ninth in the national competition three years ago after winning the regional contest, defeated 61 competitors representing elementary and middle schools from six counties.

He correctly spelled gendarme - a French police officer - and repoussage - the process of hammering thin metal - to book his trip to the nation's capital.

Mishra said he remembered hearing those words when his parents and sister quizzed him in preparation for the contest.

"My sister gave me advice and said don't be afraid of the lights," Mishra said, clutching the winner's trophy.

The Sacramento Bee hosted the regional spelling bee, which is in its 30th year.

Mishra will compete in the national spelling bee held May 26 - June 1 and televised on ESPN.
