Re "Reject Prop. 8, Obama urges" (Page A1, March 1): As a supporter of LGBT rights, I am thrilled to see President Barack Obama opposing Proposition 8.
With the U.S. Supreme Court hearing the case, there is potential for a landmark ruling that would impact the entire nation. There is no other time when public and federal opinion has been so open to accepting the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community: within the past year, we have seen the first president who openly supports gay rights, the election of the first openly gay U.S. Senator in Wisconsin and more states legalizing same-sex unions.
However, a majority of states have not yet taken this step and considering that the Obama administration tiptoed around advocating for a solution extending beyond California, it is unlikely that this case against Proposition 8 will prove to be a landmark.
But while this may not be the revolution needed to realize equality for LGBT citizens, change is certainly coming soon.
