A fire on Saturday evening destroyed a motor home and damaged an adjacent house belonging to a Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District employee, officials reported.

Four Metro district engines responded about 4:30 p.m. to a growing column of black smoke in the 8300 block of Alaterna Court.

Occupants were evacuated and no people were injured, officials said.

Firefighters determined the fire started in a motor home and spread into the house next door, burning the first and second floors and the attic, said Michelle Eidam, district spokeswoman.

At least three propane tanks exploded, and officials estimate the fire caused $100,000 of damage to the house, Eidam said.

Firefighters also worked to prevent the blaze from spreading to another adjacent home.

"That house next door suffered only a broken window," she said.

Firefighters had contained the blaze by about 6 p.m. Eidam said arson investigators are working to determine what caused the fire in the motor home.
