Regional digest: Big rally in 8th tops Sac State in baseball

The Sacramento State baseball team appeared headed for its seventh win in eight games Saturday afternoon at John Smith Field.

But visiting Cal State Northridge scored four runs in the eighth inning on the way to a 5-3 nonconference win, Sac State reported.

The Hornets (8-6) led 3-1 through seven innings, thanks to Chris Lewis, who had a run-scoring double and also drove in a run on a groundout. Andrew Ayers and Scotty Burcham each had two hits for Sac State.

The Matadors (6-9) had five consecutive singles to start the eighth inning. Two runs scored on an error by Burcham at shortstop.

• Visiting Cal State Bakersfield used a five-run third and a three-run seventh to muscle past UC Davis 12-5 at Dobbins Stadium, according to UCD.

The Roadrunners outhit the Aggies 23-10.

Mike Mazzara doubled in two runs for the Aggies (6-9). Paul Politi and Steven Patterson each had two hits.

Cael Brockmeyer was 4 for 6 with two home runs and four RBIs for the Roadrunners (10-4). Tyler Shryock was 4 for 7. Chance Gusbeth, Kevin Younger and Garrett Pierce each had three hits.

UC Davis splits two at Arizona State tournament

• The UC Davis softball team bounced back from a 4-2 loss to New Mexico State with a 5-4 win over Notre Dame at the Diamond Devil Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., Notre Dame reported.

With two outs and two runners on in the top of the seventh against the Fighting Irish (13-6), left fielder Megan Guzman made a diving catch of a line drive to end the game.

Kelly Schulze had a single and two RBIs for the Aggies (10-12).

Justine Vela (6-1) struck out six in 5 1/3 innings.

In the loss to New Mexico State (15-8), the Aggies were led by Christa Castello's 3-for-3 effort. She and Amy Nunez each drove in a run, New Mexico State reported.

• Sac State defeated Northern Illinois 13-5 at the Mustang Classic in San Luis Obispo. Sac State (12-5) is 4-0 at the event and has won a season-high seven consecutive games, Sac State reported.

Makenzie Wayadande had three hits and two RBIs. Nicole Clark (Folsom High School), Kelli Frye, Yesenia Alcala, Emily McCormick and Paige Martin all had two hits for Sac State, which earlier defeated host Cal Poly 2-0.

Griffin loses by decision

Sacramento light heavyweight Otis Griffin (24-12-2) sustained two knockdowns in losing a unanimous eight-round decision to Houston's Cornelius White (21-1) in a feature preliminary boxing match in Costa Mesa.
