This is the time of year when hundreds of residents in the Sacramento region go bald – for a cause.
Many will line up today outside de Vere's Irish Pub at 1521 L St. in downtown Sacramento from 4 to 8 p.m. today to get their heads shaved as part of the nationwide St. Baldrick's campaign to raise money to fight childhood cancer.
This year is the fourth that de Vere's has sponsored the fundraiser for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which supports pediatric cancer research. De Vere's is owned by the sons of Ralph de Vere White, director of the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Many of the participants belong to teams who raise thousands of dollars in pledges.
The de Vere's in Davis holds its head-shaving party at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
De Vere's isn't the only place in the Sacramento area participating in the St. Baldrick's effort. Giovanni's Pizzeria in South Land Park was scheduled to hold an event on Sunday. The Andy K Muay Thai Academy, 7324 Folsom Blvd., has one scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m.

Slow Food Sacramento to dish up film fest
Slow Food Sacramento will host its second Food Film Festival on Friday and Saturday at the Guild Theater, Broadway and 35th Street in Sacramento. The event opens with a 5:30 p.m. Friday screening of "Quest for Local Honey," followed by a Q&A with its Nevada City filmmakers. Then, restaurateurs Taro Arai of Mikuni and Billy Ngo of Kru will lead a sushi tasting and discussion of sustainable seafood, followed by a showing of "Jiro Dreams of Sushi."
Behind the news: Tickets are $55 for both days, $40 for Friday's honey-sushi gala or $25 for all day Saturday. In addition, Saturday's films are available individually at $7. Proceeds benefit Slow Food Sacramento and the California Food Literacy Center.

Mexico photo exhibit debuts at consulate
Sacramento's Mexican Consulate, 2093 Arena Blvd., invites the public to a new photo exhibit, "Magic Mexico: People, Tradition and Color," which debuts Thursday from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Behind the news: The exhibit showcases the art of Marc Schenker, a University of California, Davis, School of Medicine professor whose work in international health issues allows him to photograph people around the world. The exhibit will be open 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays until July 14.

AAA's new gas price survey due Tuesday
Motorists in the Sacramento area and throughout California took a beating at gas pumps in February, the result of low fuel supplies and refineries gearing up to produce pricier summer-blend gas. On Tuesday, AAA will release its monthly survey of gas prices, breaking down average pump costs in jurisdictions throughout the state.

St. Louis Symphony offers 'Egghead' music
As part of a three-day visit to UC Davis' Mondavi Center, the St. Louis Symphony will give a free outdoor concert consisting of six pieces composed by university faculty members. The so-called Egghead Music Walk - performed at the site of the "See No Evil/Hear No Evil" Egghead sculpture on the south side of Mrak Hall - will take place at 2 p.m. Friday.

Celebrate the Irish in Old Sacramento
Sacramento's St. Patrick's Day Parade returns to the boardwalks of Old Sacramento at 1 p.m. Saturday. The 17th annual event will feature more than 100 marchers, Irish and Highland dancers, and pipe and drum bands.

The California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce is presenting its first economic summit on Thursday at the Sacramento Convention Center, 1400 J St. The event will feature Assemblyman Jose Medina, D-Riverside, and Eugenio J. Crocker hosts antique appraisal session
The Art Service Group will hold one of its monthly art and antique evaluation sessions from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Crocker Art Museum, 216 O St., Sacramento.
