Rocklin-based dessert bakery chain Icing on the Cupcake plans to open a sixth Sacramento-area store in Granite Bay in the late spring.
The new outlet will be in Granite Bay's Renaissance Creek center at 3980 Douglas Blvd.
In addition, the Citrus Heights store at 5867 Sunrise Blvd., part of the Sunrise Marketplace, will celebrate grand-opening festivities on Friday and Saturday.
The company also announced that the Citrus Heights and Granite Bay stores will spearhead a new business concept shift beyond specialty cupcakes, applying its ingredients and preparation techniques to all types of personal gourmet desserts.
The new products - including specialized icings, cheesecakes, cookies and individual-size pies - will be baked and wrapped fresh daily, and ready to gift immediately.
"We are in this for the long term," said Christee Owens, founder and co-owner of Icing on the Cupcake. "We have had tremendous success focusing on our core cupcake business. Yet, the dessert business is cyclical and so we are always looking to see what's next on the horizon to keep our business relevant."
The company also has stores in Sacramento and Folsom, and two locations in Rocklin. Icing on the Cupcake plans to convert all stores to the new concept over the next 18 to 24 months.
