St. Patrick's Day arrives Sunday, meaning this usual one-day blowout will transform into three days of green-drenched shenanigans.
While previous editions of St. Patrick's Day in Sacramento were marked by large-scale block parties, look for lots of individual events around the region this year.
Many pubs are taking it upon themselves to start St. Patrick's Day celebrations tonight and wrap them up in a shamrock-style haze on Sunday night. In between, you'll find much Guinness on tap, corned beef and cabbage, and Irish music to get those jigs going.
Grab your favorite green garb and check out our picks for some of the Sacramento area's best St. Patrick's Day parties:
O'Mally's Irish Pub (1109 Second St., Sacramento): Old Sacramento will become a green machine on Saturday with the 1 p.m. St. Patrick's Day Parade.
The festivities will continue throughout weekend at this long-running Irish bar in Old Sacramento, so drop in for an Irish breakfast, a pint of Guinness or their "Irish tacos" with corned beef and pepperjack cheese. Doors open at 10 a.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday for the most hardcore of revelers. Live music will also be featured Sunday night. (916) 492-1230.
deVere's Irish Pub
(1531 L St., Sacramento; 217 E St., Davis): deVere's has become one of the area's signature destinations on St. Patrick's Day with its wide assortment of Irish whiskeys and classic Irish pub food (bangers and mash, shepherd's pie, Irish stew). Both deVere's locations Sacramento and Davis will go all-out once again with drink specials and plenty of Irish spirit.
Doors open at both locations at 9 a.m. Sunday. (916) 231-9947 (Sacramento), (530) 204-5533 (Davis), deverespub.com.
Streets of London Pub (1804 J St., Sacramento; 2200 Lake Washington Blvd., West Sacramento): Whether you plan on partying down in midtown or West Sacramento, some of the largest festivities can be found at Streets of London.
Look for food and drink specials, and outside bars that are always a big hit with the locals. (916) 498-1388 (midtown), (916) 376-9066 (West Sacramento), www.streetsoflondon.net.
Republic Bar & Grill (908 15th St., Sacramento): We're not sure if St. Patrick engaged in any green Jell-O wrestling as a way of driving the snakes out of Ireland, but that'll be among the featured events at Republic's St. Patrick's Day soiree. They'll also be serving $3 green beers and $5 shots of Jameson whiskey. Ibuprofen for the following morning not included. (916) 822-5152. www.republicsac.com.
The Golden Bear (2326 K St., Sacramento): If you're looking to groove to a mix of indie-rock and Irish tunes, the Golden Bear has you covered. A beer garden will feature such bands as Young Aundee, Syncro and Paper Pistols. Also witness a cocktail competition featuring Sacramento's top bartenders and drink specials starting at noon. (916) 441-2242. goldenbear916.com.
Gallagher's Irish Pub (1201 K St., Sacramento): Situated next to the Broiler restaurant, this Irish watering hole is an apt place to toss back a pint. Get jiggy to live Irish music, and wash down that corned beef with a variety of drink specials. (916) 444-3444. www.thebroilersteakhouse .com.
Boxing Donkey Irish Pub (300 Lincoln St., Roseville): Let's not forget the shenanigans going down in Roseville. The Boxing Donkey has some of the most thorough St. Patrick's Day celebrations in the area, with bagpipes, live radio broadcasts, a beer garden and actual donkeys for those Instagram photo opportunities. The partying starts today and stretches until last call on Sunday. (916) 797-3665. www.theboxingdonkey.com.
36 Handles Pub & Eatery (1010 White Rock Road, El Dorado Hills): This pub has taken over the space formerly occupied by Kinnee O'Reilly's Irish Pub & Restaurant, but that Irish spirit will be reignited all weekend. Hear Irish tunes from BlackEyed Dempseys at 8:30 p.m. and bagpipes at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Sunday's blowout starts at 7 a.m., including a tent area with a buffet and many drink specials. You'll also find such kid-friendly features as face painting and a children's food plate for $5. (916) 941-3606. www.36handles.com.
