SAN FRANCISCO The symphony's musicians voted to strike Wednesday, forcing cancellation of its next concert and putting a future East Coast tour and an upcoming concert appearance at UC Davis' Mondavi Center on April 18 in jeopardy.
Musicians decided to strike even though orchestra administrators were due to present a revised contract proposal. The two sides have been negotiating for the last nine months.
At issue for the musicians represented by American Federation of Musicians Local 6 is the perception that top-level orchestra management have received generous bonuses while musicians are being asked to accept a wage freeze. The orchestra has been without a contract since Feb. 15.
Orchestra musicians earn an average compensation of roughly $165,000 annually.
