Rocklin's police and fire departments will hold an orientation meeting for people interested in assisting the public safety agencies as volunteers.
The Police Department has openings for volunteers in patrol, records and front counter clerical support, code enforcement and child safety education, including giving presentations at elementary schools. These functions require volunteers who are available during the day Monday through Friday.
Officials stress that volunteers are not sworn officers and have no powers of arrest beyond those of any private person.
The Fire Department has openings for volunteers to assist with office and front counter clerical support during the day Monday through Friday; to work with fire prevention personnel in child safety seat installation and hands-only CPR instruction; and in the area of fire support.
Fire support volunteers do not fight fires but assist firefighters at fire scenes by filling air tanks and helping get units back in service. These volunteers can be called into service 24 hours a day.
To become a volunteer, candidates must be at least 18 years old, be of good moral character and have no felony or recent misdemeanor convictions.
They must be able to work with minimal supervision, work well with others, volunteer at least 16 hours per month and commit to at least three years of service. Volunteers are not required to live in Rocklin.
Becoming a volunteer involves submitting an application, a warrant check, background investigation, Life Scan fingerprint check and completion of the Volunteer Academy.
The academy, which is mandatory for all new police and fire volunteers, will meet for 10 consecutive Tuesday evenings, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 27, as well as during the day on two Saturdays.
The orientation meeting for people wishing to learn more about the volunteer program and the commitment required will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Police Department's Emergency Operations Center, 4080 Rocklin Road.
