Sacramento area weather is springlike but change coming

Sacramento had its first 80-degree day of the year on Thursday.

The spring-like conditions that have bathed Sacramento with sunny weather could change next week when National Weather Service forecasters predict a persistent high pressure system will break down, allowing rain in the valley and snow in the mountains.

'The ridge is finally going to break down," said Johnnie Powell, NWS forecaster. "Looks like the main rain will come in Tuesday night. Strong? No."

Powell said snow levels are expected to be at 5,000-6,000 feet elevation. A foot of snow at the most will fall.

The detailed, 7-day forecast for the Sacramento region from the NWS:

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 78. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 48. West northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 77. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon.

Saturday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 46. West southwest wind 8 to 10 mph becoming north northwest in the evening.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 74. Light north northwest wind increasing to 6 to 11 mph in the afternoon.

Sunday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 45.

Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 74.

Monday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 48.

Tuesday: A slight chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 71.
