2013, an alpaca odyssey

What: If you ever wanted to learn about alpacas, head to Cal Expo for the International Alpaca Odyssey. The show features alpaca judges from around the world, and is a test of the premier alpaca breeding programs of North America. There will be a live auction of alpacas, silent auction, fleece exhibits, fleece judging and vendors.

Where: 1600 Exposition Blvd., Sacramento

Healthy event

What: The Sacramento City Unified School District will sponsor a school readiness fair, offering free services such as health screenings and dental exams at the Serna Center. Parents also can receive information on kindergarten and preschool enrollments, pre-kindergarten summer camp and community resources. To encourage reading, free books will be distributed. The readiness fair is sponsored by the district's Child Development Department and Partners for School Readiness, including Kaiser Permanente, First 5 Sacramento and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District.

Variety show

What: The Sacramento Fine Arts Center will present an evening of art, poetry and jazz featuring musicians from the Dave Brubeck Institute. Musicians will compose works and poets from the Sacramento Poetry Center will compose verse inspired by the center's "Animal House" art exhibit.

When: Refreshments at 6:30 p.m.; concert at 7 p.m.

Neon benefit

What: Save the Fair Benefit: The Gnarly Neon 5K fun run will feature a St. Patrick's theme and benefit the Placer County Fair Association. Participants are asked to dress in white and run through an array of eco-friendly colored powders at stations throughout the route. Food and neon-green beer will be available for purchase.

Where: Placer County fairground, 800 All America City Blvd., Roseville

When: 10 a.m.

Cost: $40 general; $35 per person for groups of four or more people; free for children 12 and younger.
