Light to moderate spring showers are occurring today as a weather front from the Pacific Ocean moves through Northern California.
Precipitation amounts have been about what was expected at lower elevations. Downtown Sacramento had recorded .49 of an inch as of 9 a.m., while in South Sacramento, at Executive Airport, a total of .41 of an inch of rain has fallen.
In the foothills, rainfall totals were more generous, with .79 of an inch of rain in Auburn and .87 in Pilot Hill.
Web cameras were showing slushy snow down to about the 6,000-feet elevation level in the Sierra Nevada, according to the National Weather Service. NWS forecasters are still expecting only light snow today, even at the highest elevations.
The detailed, 7-day forecast from the NWS for Sacramento on the first day of spring:
Today: Showers. High near 65. South southeast wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
Tonight: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 46. South wind 3 to 8 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 70. North northwest wind 6 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.
Thursday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 40. North northwest wind around 10 mph.
Friday: Sunny, with a high near 71. North northwest wind 13 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.
Friday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 39.
Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 71.
Saturday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 42.
Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 71.
Sunday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 43.
Monday: Sunny, with a high near 72.
Monday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 45.
Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 72.
