Re "Brown looks at realignment" (Page A1, March 20): I guess I am missing something regarding realignment. The concern seems to be that if they are let out a year early they are more likely to commit more crimes. However, if we leave them to serve their full term, they will come out model citizens and live a crime free life.
Who are we kidding? It is a common knowledge that California prisons do not rehabilitate anyone. A case could be made that by keeping them in longer they get stronger and learn more criminal skills. So unless we plan to keep them in jail forever, letting them out a year early is not going to make any difference.
My guess is that if your dig into who is pushing to undo this policy, you are going to find the prison guard union, which would like nothing more than to see us build dozens more prisons.
