The U.S. Forest Service has acquired 1,370 acres near Donner Summit, a purchase that will boost recreation opportunities in the Tahoe National Forest, Truckee District Ranger Joanne Roubique announced.
"The property will provide opportunities for more sustainable trails, increased access to beautiful lakes and consolidation of national forest lands," Roubique said in a news release.
The land – north of Interstate 80 near Castle Peak, White Rock Lake and Lola Montez Lakes – was purchased for $1.3 million from Sierra Pacific Industries.
The Trust for Public Land, as part of the Northern Sierra Partnership, helped facilitate the deal, officials said.
In a simultaneous escrow, the Trust acquired the land and then transferred it to the Forest Service. The Forest Service purchased it through the Land and Water Conservation Fund allocated by Congress from fees paid by companies drilling for offshore oil.
