COACH OF THE YEAR

• Larry Price, Florin

The Stockton-based state parole agent took a struggling basketball program and turned it into a bright spot on the south Sacramento campus. Florin shocked McNair of Stockton in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II semifinals to make its first appearance at Sleep Train Arena since 1997. Although the Panthers lost to Metro Conference rival Sacramento in the section final, they made history a week later by beating Montgomery of Santa Rosa in the first CIF D-II Northern California Regional girls game to be played at Florin. "He's like a second dad, and he's a great coach," said Florin senior Daijah Joe-Smith, who had no interest in basketball until Price coaxed her into playing as a freshman. "He's put his heart into this program."
