A 52-year-old Carmichael man died and his 16-year-old son was seriously injured Tuesday night when the motorcycle they were riding collided with a van on Fair Oaks Boulevard.

The Sacramento County Coroner's Office identified the father as Martin M. Madson.

The crash occurred about 7:38 p.m. as Elmira Atarbekyan, 51, of Sacramento, driving a green 2000 Toyota Sienna, was pulling out from a private driveway on the west side of Fair Oaks Boulevard, just south of Marconi Avenue, according to a California Highway Patrol news release. The motorcycle, a 2000 Harley-Davidson, was southbound in the left lane.

As Atarbekyan exited the driveway intending to make a left turn onto northbound Fair Oaks Boulevard, she began to cross the southbound lanes directly into the path of the motorcycle, the CHP reported.

The motorcycle struck the left front of the Toyota, causing Madson and his son to be ejected and thrown onto the roadway.

Martin Madson was pronounced dead at the scene. His son was transported to Mercy San Juan Medical Center with major injuries.

Both motorcycle riders were wearing helmets.

Atarbekyan suffered minor scrapes and did not seek medical aid.

Officials said neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to have been factors in the collision. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
