Re "In Loving Memory of Robert `Rocky' Owen Cole" (Page B5, March 29): I saw the memorial to Rocky Cole who was killed in combat in Vietnam. His birthday caught my attention, as it's identical to mine. His high school photo looks like mine did.
I can't help but think of all the life Rocky never knew. I remember quite well how the draft board kept in constant touch with me. I was in college and recruiters talked me into taking the test for helicopter school.
When my family found out, they called a meeting of all the adults. Every male member of my family had served in WWI, WWII, or Korea. I was headstrong. My grandfather finally pulled me aside and begged me not to go. If I went, he said I would never be the same. I listened, but I still changed.
There but for the grace of God. Rest in peace, Rocky Cole.
