John Muir's birthday bash
Come celebrate John Muir's lifelong commitment to conservation at the John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez on April 20.
The site will host a birthday party for the naturalist that includes special exhibits and activities for all ages. Visitors can also tour Muir's 1882 Victorian home.
Muir lobbied for preserving many of the stunning wild lands mountains, rivers, canyons, shorelines, meadows, lakes and stands of giant trees that we enjoy today; he is known as the "Father of the National Park System."
John Muir National Historic Site is at 4202 Alhambra Ave., just off Highway 4 in Martinez.

NEVADA
Cowboy Festival
Take a trip to the Wild West.
The fourth annual Genoa Cowboy Festival in Nevada's oldest town on May 3-5 offers a chance experience Western lifestyle, music and recreation.
There will be several historic tours, including the Carson Valley ranch tour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 3.
A May 4 tour leads visitors on the Carson Emigrant Trail, a path that will retraces the approximate route of the 1850s California Gold Rush emigrants. That event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Attendees are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes. Tickets for the ranch tour are $125 per person and $40 for the Emigrant Trail tour.

MOUNT SHASTA
Learn about the climb
Want to ascend the fifth-highest mountain in California (and make it back down in one piece)? The Mount Shasta Climbing Rangers will show how.
The group will host a presentation that will help people prepare for the big climb up Shasta. Nick Meyers will discuss routes, climbing tips and other information on the mountain.
All are welcome to attend this free event at the REI stores in Roseville at 1148 Galleria Blvd. and in Sacramento at 1790 Expo Parkway. The talk will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. April 16 in Roseville and April 17 in Sacramento. To RSVP, visit REI.com/Sacramento.

Holloway Travel Outfitters in Sacramento will be host to Warren Berckmann, a France travel expert, Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
He will talk about the essentials of planning a trip to Paris and provide a specific "must see" list.
