Sacramento County sheriff's deputies arrested a 28-year-old man early Tuesday morning after a robbery at a convenience store and a home-invasion robbery in the Fruitridge area.
Just before 1 a.m., a clerk at a convenience store at 3920 Fruitridge Road called 911 to report his store had been robbed, said sheriff's Sgt. Jason Ramos. The clerk said the suspect was armed with a gun when he demanded money, Ramos said.
The suspect was described as a black man about 30 years old, 5 feet 7 inches and wearing a pink hoodie, Ramos said.
Soon, deputies responded to a report of a home-invasion robbery in the 5700 block of 39th Street, near 12th Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
The homeowner told deputies he heard a knock on the door and when he tried to open it, an armed man forced his way inside, Ramos said. The intruder demanded money, then drove away in the victim's car, Ramos said.
About 1:45 a.m., a patrol deputy spotted the stolen car on 14th Avenue and tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver failed to yield. The driver led deputies on a short pursuit eastbound on 14th Avenue before bailing from the car on foot, Ramos said.
The fugitive ran into McClatchy Park in the city's Oak Park neighborhood. Deputies set up a perimeter around the park and later arrested a suspect without incident. He was identified as Emanuel Looney and is suspected in both crimes, Ramos said.
Deputies recovered a replica handgun from the stolen vehicle, Ramos said.
Ramos said Looney was on "post release community supervision," part of the state's prison realignment plan. The program places nonviolent offenders under county supervision, rather than state parole supervision, upon their release from prison.
According to Sacramento Superior Court records, Looney was sentenced in 2008 to three years in prison after pleading no contest to vehicle theft, resisting arrest, giving false identification and possession of stolen property, all felonies.
In February, Looney was sentenced to 42 days on a work project after he pleaded no contest to misdemeanor drug possession, according to court records available online.
