ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Carson Palmer era drew to a costly close Tuesday, with the Raiders trading their starting quarterback to the Arizona Cardinals on the same day likely successor Matt Flynn was introduced to the local media.

Acquired in a blockbuster deal Oct. 18, 2011, after Jason Campbell broke his collarbone, Palmer cost the Raiders first- and second-round draft picks.

Less than two years later, Palmer brought only a sixth-round draft pick in exchange for their own seventh-round pick - an improvement of 43 spots in the draft - and a conditional 2014 seventh-round pick should Palmer start 13 games in Arizona.

The Raiders paid Palmer $19.94 million, got eight wins in 24 starts, and when he balked at cutting his scheduled salary of $13 million, they acquired Flynn from Seattle on Monday for a fifth-round pick in 2014 and a conditional pick in 2015.

Arizona coach Bruce Arians introduced Palmer as his starting quarterback, and Palmer said Oakland's contract offer was insufficient to remain with the Raiders.

"I was presented with a contract there, and I was advised not to sign that contract with no security, no guarantees," Palmer told reporters in Arizona. "My agent told me he would never have me sign that contract. That opportunity led me here to Coach Arians."

Palmer was not only guaranteed a reported $10 million by Arizona but also believes he has signed on with a contender although the Cardinals at 5-11 were only a game better than Oakland's 4-12 in 2012.

"I've only got a couple shots left," Palmer said. "I've been in this league for a long time. It's nothing personal, it's not statistical, it's about trying to win a championship."

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said in a statement, "We'd like to thank Carson Palmer for his services over the past two seasons, and we wish him well in Arizona."

Flynn, who has just two starts over five seasons as a backup with Green Bay (behind Aaron Rodgers) and Seattle (behind Russell Wilson), said he was promised nothing by the Raiders and will compete with Terrelle Pryor.

"What they want to do is breed a competitive environment," Flynn said. "You breed competition at every position and guys start learning how to win, how to kick, scratch, claw, whatever it takes to win."

Flynn led LSU to a national championship after sitting behind JaMarcus Russell and has experienced only one losing season - the Packers were 6-10 in his rookie season - since the start of his high school career.

"You're going to get a smart, disciplined player that doesn't like to lose and doesn't accept losing," Flynn said. "I've been fortunate to be a part of some very good teams. . . . Hopefully I can bring a little bit of that here."

The Raiders reportedly increased Flynn's base salary from $5.25 million to $6.5 million and guaranteed the contract.

- ESPN reported the Raiders agreed to terms on a one-year contract with cornerback Tracy Porter worth $2.5 million. Porter, 26, played for New Orleans from 2008 through 2011 when Allen was defensive backs coach for the Saints.

The Raiders made no announcements regarding Porter but did confirm a visit from free agent cornerback Mike Jenkins, who last played for Dallas.
