Sacramento area sunny, warm today but rain expected Thursday

One more day of sunshine before gentle rain moves into Northern California.

The National Weather Service reports that a high pressure system will continue to deliver warm and dry conditions to the Sacramento region today. The daytime maximum temperature is expected to be in the high 70s.

Look for some light precipitation on Thursday. Rainfall amounts in the Central Valley are expected to be a third-of-an-inch or less. The mild Pacific storm is also expected to bring snowfall to the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada.

Showers will have faded away by Friday.

The detailed, 7-day forecast from the NWS for the Sacramento region:

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 77. Calm wind becoming west southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Tonight: A 20 percent chance of rain after 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 53. South southwest wind 5 to 8 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Thursday: Showers. High near 66. Light southeast wind becoming south southwest 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Thursday night: A 40 percent chance of showers, mainly before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 52. South southwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light south in the evening. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 72. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon.

Friday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 50.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 71.

Saturday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49.

Sunday: A chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 70.

Sunday night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 47.

Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 73.

Monday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 51.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 77.
