Mike Sophia, who has a long record of sports management and event organizing in the South, has been appointed the new director of the Sacramento Sports Commission by the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Sophia will be responsible for fostering economic growth in the region by securing, promoting and sustaining sporting events, tournaments, amateur and youth sports, and conventions.
Sophia most recently served as CEO of the Louisiana-based National Senior Games Association. From 2004 to January 2012, he was executive director of the Miami-Dade Sports Commission in South Florida.
"We're extremely pleased to bring someone of Mike's caliber to Sacramento," said Steve Hammond, president and CEO of the SCVB.
In November, the Sacramento City Council disbanded the Sacramento Sports Commission and consolidated the panel into the SCVB.
John McCasey, the longtime executive director of the commission, recently was named editor of Softball West, owned by Softball West LLC.
