Davis gardener Gerhard Bock, author of "Bamboo, Succulents and More," finds something that grows very well during Sacramento Valley winters aeoniums:
"In October, I turned a neglected planting strip in the backyard into another succulent bed. Although there are a few echeverias, two agaves and a Kalanchoe beharensis, the strip is dominated by aeoniums.
"I'm still amazed by the rate of growth. Since aeoniums are winter growers and go dormant in the summer, I expect their growth to slow down the closer we get to summer (mid- to late May in our neck of the woods). But fast forward to this time next year; I wonder if the entire planting strip will be an aeonium jungle?"
