Regional digest: Sac State baseball tops Texas State

Published: Saturday, Apr. 6, 2013 - 12:00 am | Page 7C

Freshman Nathan Lukes equaled a season best with three hits as the Sacramento State baseball team defeated visiting Texas State 3-2 on Friday at John Smith Field.

Lukes started a three-run third with a single. One out later, Rhys Hoskins (Jesuit High School) singled in Lukes. A mishandled grounder by Will Soto (Elk Grove High) brought in Chris Lewis and Hoskins, Sac State reported on its athletics website.

Last spring, Lukes led Center High in batting (.450) and RBIs (26). He is hitting .297 this season for the Hornets (16-13, 3-4 Western Athletic Conference).

The Bobcats (12-17, 5-2), who began the day tied for first in the WAC, scored in the seventh and eighth to get within a run, but Sac State's Sutter McLoughlin (Rio Americano) threw a 10-pitch, perfect ninth inning for his sixth save.

• A solid pitching effort by Harry Stanwyck wasn't enough for UC Davis, which lost 3-0 to No. 4-ranked Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference game at Dobbins Stadium, UCD reported on its athletics website.

Stanwyck allowed an earned run and four hits in six innings, but the Aggies (10-17, 0-4) managed just four hits in suffering their fifth consecutive loss.

Former Rocklin High standout Austin Diemer had two hits and a stolen base for the Titans (26-4, 4-0).

Sac State softball splits at Southern Utah

Following an 8-0 mercy-rule win over Southern Utah in the opener, the visiting Sacramento State softball team lost 3-1 in the second game of a Big Sky Conference doubleheader in Cedar City, Utah.

Lauren Blair's grand slam backed Caitlin Brooks' two-hit shutout in the opener. Kortney Solis doubled in two runs, Sac State reported on its athletics website.

Solis had three hits in the second game, but the Hornets (18-14, 3-2) made four errors in the loss to the Thunderbirds (10-26, 4-4). Riley Price, Emily McCormick and Paige Martin each had two hits for the Hornets.

Unstable conditions cancel auto race

Unstable track conditions because of rain this week forced cancellation of today's World of Outlaws sprint car race at Calistoga Speedway. No makeup date has been set.
